Grammy nonsense

If you want to be bored quickly I suggest you check out the list of Grammy nominees ... One wonders what on earth the Grammys are supposed to be honoring, because it seems not to be music. Kanye West, though a skillful producer does not create music, he simply sample others and reworks someone else's idea for his own use. Lyrically and creatively the music busines is pretty stagnant and real quality in both song and production doesn't seem to be represented. I had a hard time recognizing any of the nominees and I'm pretty in touch (I think). If Amy Winehouse is the leading nominee....I think we can officially that THIS is the day the music died.

The most anticipated release (for me!!)

I am really looking forward to checking out the latest from Mr. Butler. Having witnessed him in concert last year, I have no doubt that I am in for a treat. In fact, I've been wondering why they took so long to put out a live CD. A bonus is the DVD which is always welcome. Combine this with the fact that this was recorded in Jonathan's homeland (witness the ecstatic reaction to his appearance with Israel Houghton on Alive in South Africa) then I can safely predict that I will not be disappointed.......more to follow!

Daler Mehndi's latest Bhangra Offering

My latest fave is the latest full length album by Punjabi pop Icon "Daler Mehndi".
'Raula Pai Gaya' is best described as pulsating happy music. I have no idea what he's singing about but somehow it doesn't matter as the music transports us to the streets of Mumbai and beyond. While I wait patiently for a full-length collaboration with the Wolfmen to come to fruition, this offering will be more than adequate.

What I'm listening to.....

Michael Manson's second album is a great album to drive to. I got a chance to meet Michael after a concert in Memphis where he was the root bass for Jonathan Butler, Kirk whalum and Wayman Tisdale. He flows in much the same way as Mr. Tisdale but has a little more breadth to his music. He has come a long way since playing for gospel legend, Jessy Dixon back in the mid-eighties....

Something's still goin on with Sir Cliff!

Unbelievable as it is, Cliff Richard is still making vital, quality music almost 50 years after his teenage breakthrough in the late 1950's as an Elvis wannabe. Still hampered in the U.S. by almost zero promotion and distribution, his light still burns thanks to an extremely loyal fan base who are rarely disappointed by his performances both live and in the studio. Astute in his choice of songs and never afraid to flirt with the currency of modern pop music, he is a bona fide legend in a world that too often honors mediocrity.

What I'm Listening to

This is what I've been listening to the last couple of days alongside the Wolfmen....
"Embrace" is an English Band, unfairly compared to Coldplay....this is a great album from start to finish! Also the Chieftans who for many years held up the torch for Gaelic music and in this collection duet with a diverse group of artists ranging from Ziggy Marley to Sting to Sinead O' Connor as well as Ricky Skaggs and Joni Mitchell......AAAAAAHHHH!

The Long Road Out of Eden

I have a confession to make....I really like the Eagles! In fact I am not a Johnny-come -lately. I was wondering round my High School campus with the 1st Eagles album under my arm in 1972.....
Now comes news that a new album is on the way.....I have heard some tracks and it sounds like vintage Eagles. The live concert DVD recorded in Melbourne Australia was a wonderful testament to their longevity and their undiminished powers. It sounds as though they will regail us with a good dose of social commentary. You can check out anytime you want but you can never leave!!

Daler Mehndi and the Wolfmen

My friend Chris Constantinou has teamed up with Marco and Punjabi pop sensation Daler Mehndi to record an album. Check out a behind the scenes video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48D6WejNGck also check out the TWO EYES single now available on I-Tunes.
p.s. The more I listen to "TWO EYES" along with Daler Mehndi's latest solo recording the more I firmly believe that the Wolfmen collaboration will open some amazing new audiences for Mr. Mehndi. I am utterly hooked with that voice and of course I'm partial to anything my good friend Chris does!
